IRON BUTT Challenge - it’s started

Well, they set off on Friday 18th June for a good nights sleep before the start. I will be tracking them on both the website and facebook. The Picture below will show where they have been and the route (shown by the arrows) and a time stamp of where they are. This route shows red arrows which is the anti clockwise route, Paul and Tim are doing it the opposite way (no change there then) so the black arrows show their progress.

About the IRON BUTT Challenge

Paul and Tim are off on the 19th to do the Iron Butt challenge. This is where you do 1000 miles in 24 hours, YES 1000 MILES IN 24 HOURS. Mad, of course, but all in a good cause as it is in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal. Last year it raised over £30,000 with 174 people finishing, this year lets hope for more.

So why am I not riding it? well, basically I have some common sense and a deep desire to keep some feeling in my posterior for the next few months. However, I will be doing a John O’Groats to lands end run later in the year.

To put it in context, assuming they have no sleep at all for the whole 24 hours, they have to average 48 miles per hours (assuming 3 hours over the 24 for food, petrol and drink stops). If the do sleep / nap, then rough times are shown below:

They are taking the northern route which is shown below:

and we will be keeping in touch via the website and facebook.
